I was shocked to just hear on the news that my idol , Jim Henson
Creator of the Muppets, died this morning of a massive bacterial infection.
He was only 53.
Having grown up on Sesame Street as well as the Muppet Show, I always had the
magic of Henson in my life. As a teen, I took great pride in knowing that I
could mimic the voices of almost all the characters, and actually could tell
you the names of some of the most obscure ones. And now as an adult (?) , I
could enjoy the fruits of his labors with shows such as Fraggle Rock, The
Storyteller, The Jim Henson Hour (a show ahead of it's time), and Jim's last
show - The Ghost of Fafner Hall.
For a man whom I've never met, He touched my life in every way. I
learned the art of comedic timing watching Kermit and Fozzie. Doing his voices
helped me survive High School. I've always tried to be a bit of a Muppet
Historian, picking up bits of info here and there, and I felt like a part of
the family when I picked up and understood some of the really private jokes
that were intersperced within shows.
His career started by cutting up his grandmother's coat to make Kermit,
and helped to ensure that his legacy would live on by joining with Disney.
It's almost as if he knew.
My friend Jim is gone now, and though the world is lessend by
his passing, the world was truely enriched by his life.
I shall miss him dearly.
